St. Regis Preschool Curriculum Overview

The preschool curriculum encompasses the developmental milestones of children three through five years of age.  Our curriculum and assessments are aligned with our Young Fives and Kindergarten core curriculum.  We use Handwriting Without Tears and developmentally appropriate practice to introduce concepts and skills that encourage growth of the whole child.  We believe that learning is a process based on a continuum of development and assess each child individually through formal and informal assessment tools to meet his/her needs based on the range of development.  Through the use of play-based centers, we meet the seven domains of early childhood development; cognitive skills, language skills, gross and fine motor, social behavior, self-care/personal responsibility, and sense of self.

1. Cognitive Skills: skills that require critical thinking such as problem solving, imaginative and elaborate pretend play, examination of materials and objects and the ability to express observations, building and construction with a variety of materials, counting, understanding of number sense, and recognition of numbers

2. Language Skills: skills that require the ability to understand the basic rules of the English language, express self clearly and use full sentences, comprehend and follow two or more step directions, recognize the concepts of print, and letter/sound relationships

3. Gross Motor: skills that require the use of our limbs and movement

4. Fine Motor: skills that require the muscle strength, a nimble mobility of our fingers, and hand-eye coordination to find success in writing, scissor use and manipulation of small objects with control.

5. Social Behavior: skills that require an understanding of positive relationships and the ability to form relationships with others including a sense of tolerance and empathy.

6. Self-Care/Personal Responsibility: skills that require independence and understanding of rules and routines

7. Sense of Self: skills that require understanding and expression of feelings and the ability to view self as capable and joyful beings

St. Regis Preschool believes that these domains are best meet through the use of designated centers throughout the classroom.  Some of these centers include; writing, reading, block/building, sensory, pretend/dramatic play, art, media, and a science/discovery.  Each classroom is specifically designed to meet the needs of the developmental ages of the children.
